Poplar HARCA - Health Outreach Guides graduate!

The Poplar Housing and Regeneration Community Association (HARCA) have recently completed a vigorous study course to train Health Outreach Guides for work in the community.

The course ran for 3 hours a week over a total of 14 weeks. Over 20 people of all ages and backgrounds took part and certificates were awarded to the proud graduates by CC+ Grant Manager, Michal Morris-Camille at the end of the course.

The training for the volunteers concentrated on general health promotion using very simple awareness-raising exercises from relaxation and exercise, managing time, food and nutrition to managing chronic illnesses and breast screening awareness, focussing specifically on how these issues affect the BME community.

UNITE Mediation - North East volunteers complete training

The UNITE mediation service has been helping people solve disputes for more than 10 years. Disputes over noise, pets, boundaries, anti-social behaviour and parking have all been handled by the services.

North East volunteers have just completed a training course (part of a special project funded by Connecting Communities Plus) which means they can now mediate and help neighbours resolve their disputes.

The project focused on training members of minority ethnic communities and community wardens to be volunteer mediators. Newly-trained volunteers are just about to go out on their first case visits to people involved in neighbourhood disputes, including disputes in Hartlepool.

PATH National Ltd - New initiative in environmental health

Skills development agency PATH National is working in partnership with the Association of London Environmental Health Managers (ALEHM), the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) and Middlesex University to create a national programme that addresses staff recruitment and retention issues in the environmental health sector. Supported by Communites and Local Government (CLG) and London Development Agency (LDA), PATH’s focus is on addressing skills deficits and enhancing workforce diversity through training interventions aimed at black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) individuals.

Working closely with several environmental health departments within London local authorities, PATH launched a three-year pilot programme in 2004 which offered nine traineeships in boroughs including Richmond, Ealing, Greenwich and Haringey. These traineeships incorporate work-based learning and the chance to gain a relevant accredited qualification – the first cohort is completing either a BSc in Environmental Health at Middlesex University or an MSc at King’s College, London.

Mothertongue Counselling & Listening Service - end of year celebration

Mothertongue Counselling & Listening Service - 2006 celebrationMothertongue Counselling & Listening Service is a multi-ethnic counselling organisation that also offers practical support through its Cross Cultural Support Worker Project. The aim of the project has been to train a group of support workers able to assist clients in their own language. The support workers help clients to gain access to local services, find their independence, and assist them in becoming part of the community. The Connecting Communities Plus grant from Communities and Local Government has been instrumental to the project.

In December 2006, Mothertongue celebrated the end of a successful year - Mayor of Reading , Bet Tickner, and Reading West MP, Martin Salter appreciated the excellent work being done by Mothertongue and joined staff and supporters at a celebration of their achievements.
